BAHAWALPUR, Sept 20: District returning officer district and sessions judge Syed Ejaz Husain Shah on Tuesday dismissed an appeal of the Bahawalpur Ittehad against the acceptance of nomination papers of Sadiq Dost group’s Sahibzada Umer Daud Abbasi, a candidate for the slot of district nazim.

In its appeal, the Ittehad had submitted that Daud Abbasi had not mentioned the details of his property in the nomination papers.

On Monday, the DRO after hearing arguments from both groups’ counsels had reserved the judgment which it announced on Tuesday.

The DRO had disposed of a total of 16 appeals against the acceptance and rejection of papers of the candidates participating in the third phase of the local polls.

SUPPORT FOR ITTEHAD: As many as 182 out of 273 nazims, naib nazims and councillors of 21 union councils of Bahawalpur tehsil have pledged their allegiance to the PML-supported Bahawalpur Ittehad led by MNA Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi.

The loyalties by the councillors were declared one by one at a Ittehad’s workers convention here late Monday night.

On the occasion, an activist of the rival Sadiq Dost Group, Sheikh Dilshad Qureshi, announced his decision to join the Bahawalpur Ittehad.

Police have registered a case against the absconding driver.

ARRESTED: Cantonment police have arrested Shakeel and Ayyaz for killing their friend, Hasan Raza.

Their third accomplice, Aqeel, has got an interim bail before arrest.
