LAHORE, Sept 16: The Lahore Race Club (LRC) has instructed all owners, trainers and their authorised agents to adopt strict precautionary measures to save their horses from the deadly disease of glanders.
LRC sources said that it has come to the notice of LRC chairman and stewards that glanders has recently broken out in horses at the Lahore Polo Club stables at Jilani park.
Consequently a couple of horses have died, two destroyed and over a dozen affected by the disease.
The LRC has taken all precautions to stop its communication to the LRC stables.
Glanders is a horse related disease, which is said to be contagious. Its symptoms include swelling under the jaw and mucous discharge from the horse’s nostrils.
This disease is communicated to human beings as well as to the other animals.
The Lahore Polo Club sources said that the affected horses have been separated and are being treated by a specialist veterinarian of Faisalabad.
Since the disease can affect human beings too, the LRC has requested the staff and members of the Polo Club to keep themselves away from the stables, rather the premises of the LRC, particularly those who are in direct contact with the Polo Club horses.
A Lahore Polo Club source said that the disease had spread out last month because of the sheer negligence of the Polo Club syces, as the disease has spread due to contaminated drinking water.entry rates increased
The LRC stewards have decided to raise the entry ticket rate by rupees fifty per person from Oct 2.
An announcement made by the LRC said that the rate of entry ticket will be raised from rupees 100 to rupees 150 from the next.
LRC sources said that the increase has been necessitated because of the introduction of racing in floodlights, which has incurred extra expenditure which is being shared with the race-goers.
Night racing at the Lahore Racecourse started on Sept 4 last with the staging of eight cup races, three in floodlights.
Since then daily three races are being held after sunset.
However, the formal inauguration of Night Racing will be held on October 2.
Stipend for syces
The LRC has sanctioned a stipend of rupees 200 for each syce employed with horse-owners at the LRC stables.
The LRC in a notification has advised all syces to bring a certificate from the owner certifying that he is working on his horse in LRC stables and only then he will be paid the stipend amount.
The money will be paid from the club’s funds.
