KARACHI, Jan 18: Bespectacled Farhan Idrees’ dream run finally came to an end in the Red & White Sindh Cup, when he went down 3-5 to Ahmed Bawany at the Indus Snooker Hall Friday.

Farhan who chalked up a break of 81 in the fourth round crushed Mohammad Munjee 5-1 and then cruised into the quarterfinals when he whipped Faisal Essa 5-0.

Bawany on the other hand breezed past Kashif Zubair 5-0 in the fourth round, but just managed to sneak into the quarterfinals beating Shoaib A. Qadir 5-4, after trailing 0-4.

In a keen tussle for supremacy the two cueists raced neck and neck till 3-3, before Bawany potting pink and black won the crucial seventh frame 69/60 to forge ahead 4-3.

Bawany a former Pakistan international, took a commanding 47/25 lead in the eighth with one red and the six coloured balls to pot.

Farhan then snookered his opponent thrice and then sinking pink with the free ball collected 19 valuable points to move closer 44/47, before Bawany sunk the last red.

Still going great guns Farhan then potted yellow to blue to take over the lead 58/48, needing only the pink ball to tie the scores at 4-4. Playing safe for the pink near the centre pocket, Farhan was horrified to see the ball hit the jaw of the pocket and present Bawany with a fairly easy shot.

Pouncing on this great opportunity, Bawany then potted pink and the black to emerge a 5-3 winner and book his berth in the semi-finals where he will meet dangerman Mohammad Aklas on Saturday afternoon. Aklas with splendid breaks of 51, 62 and 48 had little difficulty in disposing off another former Pakistan international Mohammad Aslam 5-1.

The same could be said about Ahmer Sheikh, who beat Mohammad Amin by an identical margin, chalking up breaks of 53 and 61 in the opening and third frames.

Masood Ahmed was tied 2-2 with Danish Haroon before two handsome breaks of 49 and 75 saw him move ahead 4-2. Danish fighting back tooth and nail pocketed the seventh frame 89/9 to close ranks 3/4.

But this was to be Danish’s last hurrah. Coming back strongly with another fine break of 67, Masood forced Danish to surrender the eighth frame and match 3-5.
