OKARA, Sept 14: The tussle between Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi and Defence Minister Rao Sikander Iqbal who is also supported by former chief minister Mian Manzoor Wattoo, over the latter’s support for Shah Muqeem group for district nazim slot continues despite ‘third party’ intervention.

Only 48 hours earlier, Rao Sikander and former Punjab chief minister and head of Tamir-i-Watan group Mian Manzoor Ahmad Watto, along with other political figures of the district had decided to nominate Rao Sikander’s son Atif Sikander for district nazim slot. Mian Manzoor Watto was decided to be the covering candidate of Rao Atif.

Sources said that on Wednesday evening a high-ranking official of a sensitive institution and an important figure of provincial government held a meeting with Rao Sikander Iqbal, Mian Manzoor Ahmad Watto and former provincial minister Syed Afzaal Ali Shah Gillani. The two ‘mediators’ tried to convince Mr Rao and Mian Manzoor to withdraw their candidate for district nazim slot and to settle the matter amicably, but the both allies, reportedly, said that they were under an oath to support each other.

SUSPENDED: District police officer Dr Jamil Ahmad has suspended the police constable who allegedly used abusive language against his colleague at the residence of defence minister the previous night.

The constable, Khizar Hayat, had reportedly used abusive language against one of his colleague, Arshad, who was posted as a guard at the minister’s residence.

The DPO has sent the constable to Lahore for his complete mental checkup.

DEMAND: Human Rights Commission’s Okara chapter coordinator Asghar Hussain Hammad has demanded that the Punjab government should withdraw ‘baseless’ cases registered against PPP district president and MPA Muhammad Ashraf Khan Sohna.

He said that these cases registered under 16 MPO are just to harass the political workers belonging.

ELECTION: The Okara press club elections were completed on Tuesday.

Rao Fazalur Rehman was elected as president, Iqbal Chaudhry as senior vice-president, Tariq Siddiq as vice-president, Muhammad Nasim Ansari as general secretary, Hafeez Nizami as additional secretary, Sahibzada Izharul Haq as finance secretary and Tariq Khan as information secretary.
