KOHAT: A modern driving licence unit started functioning in tribal subdivision of Darra Adamkhel on Tuesday.

DSP Sanobar Shah, chief traffic warden Arab Jan and other officials inaugurated the unit during a ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shah said the unit was equipped with uninterrupted power supply facility.

He said staff, including training instructors, had been hired to impart driving skills and issue learners’ permits and driving licences within shortest possible time. He said the district police officer had approved the unit and allocated funds for it.

DSP Shah said the tribesmen would be encouraged to have driving licences because following the former Fata’s merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa driving vehicles without licence was forbidden.

The police officer said that dozens of people had applied for the learner’s permits on the very first day of the launch of the driving licence office.

AUTO THIEVES ARRESTED: The police claimed on Tuesday to have busted a gang of auto thieves.

ASP Danial Ahmed Javed along with SHO Bilitang Rehanullah and investigation officer Naqeebullah told journalists that a man, Ikram Khan, had approached them saying that two men hired his taxi from Hangu to Kohat, but after reaching Dhodha Road they held him at gunpoint. He told the police that when he put up resistance, they fired at and injured him, taking away the cab.

ASP Javed said the police erected blockades on the main and village roads, and found the car abandoned near the Kot graveyard. He said the police also reached the accused and held them from the Kot village.

He said the auto thieves, Zafar Iqbal and Habibullah, had been booked and handed over to the investigation branch.
