Shabbir-Rafi claim doubles title

KARACHI, Sept 6: Shabbir Gul and Rafi Darbari from Hyderabad claimed the 35 plus doubles title of Seniors national ranking tennis tournament at Karachi Club beating Shahid Hussain and Imran Ahmed 6-2, 6-2.

Shahid who earlier created the biggest upset when he outclassed top seed in the quarterfinal maintaining his form to beat Azheruddin 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal of 45 plus singles and will now face Zahid Hussain in the final.

Zahid downed Gul Hameed who retired at the score of 5-0 in the first set.

Rafi’s winning form in 35 plus singles also ended when he was beaten by Shabbir Gul 6-3, 6-2. In the other semifinal Qutub Alam shattered Ittifat hopes for the final beating him 6-3, 6-2.

Shahid and Altaf Hussain in 45 plus doubles beat Akber Khan and Yousuf Suleman 6-3, 6-2 to confirm berth in the final.

The winners will meet Hyder Ansari-Zulfiqar in the final who defeated Tariq Khan-Tariq Aziz in the semifinal 6-4, 6-2
