Air traffic staff to resume strike

Published September 6, 2005

LAHORE, Sept 5: The Air Traffic Control Wing has decided to resume its protest campaign against the Civil Aviation Authority by adopting the go-by-book procedure from Sept 11. Officials told Dawn on Monday that they had decided to take the extreme step on the CAA’s callous attitude towards their demands.

They said they had put off their campaign in June on the assurance of the CAA director-general that their grievances would be redressed.

They said in the department promotion committee (DPC) meeting held last month none of their demands were accepted. Instead the DPC members asked the protesting controllers to leave the organization and they would hire new staff from the Pakistan Air Force.

They said they had been denied promotion for the last 15 years whereas the officers of other wings were given promotion after every two years.

They said the ATC wing should be given priority as its officials required high degree accuracy while performing their duties. Besides, they said the ATC was the most revenue generating wing.

It is pertinent to mention that in April and June, over 300 domestic and 100 international flights were delayed because of adopting the procedure.
