'I am a cancer survivor with low immunity': Shehbaz excuses himself from NAB appearance

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on Friday asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to grant him an extension for his appearance, stating that medical professionals had "advised him to restrict his movements due to life threatening risks associated with Covid-19" as he was a cancer survivor.

NAB had summoned Shehbaz on April 17 (today), asking him furnish the complete details of his foreign assets and other businesses in a money laundering case.

In a fresh questionnaire sent to Shehbaz, NAB had said multiple call up notices, along with questionnaires, were issued to the PML-N leader but his replies were found “unsatisfactory, incomplete and evasive”.

Shehbaz was also asked to provide the complete details of his business income as claimed before the Federal Board of Revenue, along with investment and its volume and expenditures incurred during the period when his Model Town residence was declared the chief minister house/camp office.

In a reply submitted to the bureau today, Shehbaz said he had been questioned "at great length about his entire career and assets while in NAB's custody on physical remand" and "furnished whatever information was sought and was available".

"All call up notices were replied [to] within the [given] time and full cooperation was extended, including personal appearances."

Shehbaz said "it was unfortunate that the call up notice described the replies as unsatisfactory, incomplete and evasive".

He added that all his assets were on record and he had been regularly updating the concerned authorities about his assets.

Commenting on his reason for not appearing, Shehbaz said: "I am a 69-year-old cancer survivor due to which I have low immunity. Medical professionals have advised me to restrict movement and limit exposure due to life threatening risks associated with Covid-19."

He added that the data required by NAB is also unavailable due to the lockdown.

In 2018, medical experts had told Dawn on the condition of anonymity that years go Shehbaz was treated for appendicular adenocarcinoma (a cancerous tumour).

According to his medical reports that had surfaced at the time, Shehbaz was said to be suffering from a kidney infection, a lymph node in his chest and had chances of his cancer resurfacing.

The so called cancer survivor is ok to contest elections, walk on streets of London, come to pakistan right when he knew flights will be canceled, hold political and strategical meetings with political parties but when it comes to reply to NAB or investigation, he gets very sick. The simplest solution is to return at least part of the looted wealth and quit Pakistan to enjoy his other billions with his whole family minus Hamza in London. The Government should pay any attention to his medical excuses as they did in case of his brother Nawaz whose Doctors were on a daily basis saying that if he is not treated in UK for platelets he will die. He should also realize that his life is not more important than millions of other poor Pakistani facing the pandemic.

These NAB appearances are useless exercises which bring no recovery. While the whole world prosecutes criminals scientifically and objectively by collecting evidences which can be clearly pursued in a court of law leading to conviction, the NAB relies on the accused to furnish evidence, which I am sorry to say no accused is going to provide for them.

If NAB found any irregularity then they can go to court with proofs for punishment. Seems just harassment. Same for assets and taxes. Majority of people who are commenting here do they bother to think why NAB only calls mostly the opposition parties and put them under arrest in some cases for months. Is there any solid out come , evidence, or recovery from any of previous cases. Why they don’t bother to look into irregularities in Peshawar BRT , Malam jabba case , billlion trees , recent sugar , wheat crisis , earlier price hikes in pharmaceutical and list goes on.

NAB should erect a plexiglass room with and microphone and speakers. Shahbaz Sharif can sit in isolation and answers the question. The doctors' recommendations are meaningless, as we know from the case of his brother. Unfortunately, our doctors lack ethics and can be bought. Not every cancer survivor is immunocompromised. The post-cancer immunity depends on the type of cancer, treatment modalities, and whether the patient is still on immune-modulating drugs. His claim of susceptibility to infection could just be a ploy, or he is trying to garn sympathies to invoke his illness.

Who advised Mr. Shahabaz Sharif, an immunocompromised cancer survivor, to return to Pakistan? At the airports and in the plane, he had contact with more people than he would have at the NAB court. At his return, he spoke to journalists and was received by the well-wishers without social distancing. At the time, he had no such concerns.

So let's examine Shahbaz's logic here. He thinks Coronavirus may be present inside the courtroom at NAB, so he may get infected due to his low immunity. But the virus is not present outside the NAB premises, or in Lahore itself or on the plane he flew in from London and not even inside his home - so he feels safe away from NAB?? Is that why he was wearing a mask as soon as he landed back from London?? Does anyone else see the stupidity of this argument? I hope the judge will laugh at this and reject his plea not to attend the proceeding.

..but however I am not immune from engaging corrupt practices and stealing the national wealth with impunity..is the underlying creed of Shariff family.. No lame excuse should be entertained.. He should be subjected ro process of law and locked behind the bar if and when warranted..

I am sick and tired of the Sharifs using their health issues as a shield to protect themselves from accountability. These people are corrupt to the core. It is time that they should be dragged to the courts. The NAB gives them way, the judges let them travel abroad, what on earth is happening.

NAB is not fit for the purpose. Another words USELESS. Have they proved any high profile corrupt person guilty, and has any one gone to prison, and they have not gotbail on some grounds.

Unfortunately, the current conditions has given Shabaz Sharif an opportunity to make a valid excuse. There is no way Nawaz Sharif is coming back. My advice just give the entire family a NRO and tell them to never return to Pakistan. Pakistan will not get any money back let bygones be bygones and focus on getting the country out of this predicament.
