ISLAMABAD, Aug 31: The Pakistan Election Commission (PEC) on Wednesday said results of a union council election can only be challenged through an election-petition before recently established election tribunals.

In an announcement, secretary PEC Kanwar Dilshad said the Local Government Election Rules provide that no election can be called in question except by an election petition made by a candidate for that election before the election tribunal appointed by the chief election commissioner.

Therefore, such election petitions are required to be filed with the concerned election tribunals within a month of the publication of the results in the official gazette.

He further explained that before issuance of notifications of the results, complaints received in the election commission office were duly considered and appropriate orders were issued by the acting CEC Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar in accordance with the law.

After the notification of results of the second phase on August 30, all aggrieved persons should approach election tribunals, who are judicial officers appointed for redress of their grievances, he added.
