US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted an application from Bill and Melinda Gates supported Inovio Pharmaceuticals to launch Phase 1 human clinical testing for a Covid-19 vaccine, TechCrunch reported.

The DNA vaccine involves the candidate to inject engineered genetic material which would enable cells to produce targeted anti-bodies to fight off the virus. Though DNA vaccines have been used to cure infections in animals, they have never been used on humans.

This is the second Covid-19 vaccine to enter human trial. Earlier in March, a vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. went into human trial in Seattle, Washington.
