HYDERABAD, Jan 17: The Zila Nazim, Dr. Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman directed all the officials of various departments to make fool-proof security arrangements and maintain a close liaison with the police department.

He was presiding over a meeting at the Shahbaz Hall on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed the prevailing situation and discussed how to maintain peace and provide full protection to the people.

It informed that volunteers and civil defence personnel in large numbers will assist the law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace in the district and 200 scouts will be trained to assist the traffic police.

It informed that an adequate supply of medicines would be made available in all the hospitals during an emergency and the presence of doctors and paramedical staff would be ensured. Besides, 36 ambulances including Edhi ambulances will also remain available in the city.

The Zila Nazim directed the officials to enforce the chowkidari system in their offices effectively.

Those who attended the meeting included the district police officer, Hyderabad, Moazzam Jah; the EDO, Finance, Abdul Qadir Mangi; the EDO, Community Development, Ms Shams Jafrani; the district revenue officer, Shakeel Ahmed; and senior officials of education, Wasa, agriculture and irrigation departments.

SOLIDARITY: A large number of councillors, Nazims and Naib Nazims of various union councils including women councillors and municipal workers of Hyderabad city tehsil held a rally to express solidarity with President Pervez Musharraf and the armed forces of Pakistan.

The rally was led by Tehsil Nazim Haji Moinuddin Shaikh, Naib Nazim Abdul Qadeer Naghar and Zila Naib Nazim Nawab Rashid Ali Khan.

Its participants carried banners and placards.

Addressing the rally, Mr Rashid said that the entire Pakistani nation stood like a rock behind the armed forces to defend the motherland.

He said all the political parties and groups had settled their differences and were united on one platform to defend every inch of the country.

He said nothing was more important than the integrity and solidarity of the country and the people would spare no sacrifices in the defence of the country.
