KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday released Rs264 million for controlling the dog population in the province.

Local Government Secretary Roshan Ali Shaikh said that the amount would be spent on implementing a humane method of controlling the population of stray dogs in Sindh.

Briefing about the method, he said the province would be the pioneer in adopting scientific and humane method for controlling street dogs. The project included vaccination of street dogs and then releasing them.

“Dogs will be trapped, neutered or sterilized and again released in their respective areas,” he said, adding that the project had already been approved by the government of Sindh.

Mr Shaikh was of the view that the project would successfully result in getting rid of 90 per cent of street dogs in the next five years without resorting to killing them.
