LONDON: Lord Wright, Chairman of the United Nations War Crimes Commission stated today [March 20] that he was doing all he could to bring about co-operation with the U.S.S.R. on the question of war criminals.

Speaking in the House of Lords’ debate on war criminals, Lord Wright said that he very much desired to contact the Russians’ organisation. He gathered there were diplomatic reasons which made it impossible for the Russians to become members of the United Nations Commission or of an enlarged Commission. But he saw no reason at all why there should not be inter-communication of advice and information. Other points made by Lord Wright were: the Commission had added Hitler to its list as an ordinary criminal. The Commission was not thinking of a political crime. There was evidence that the murdering of people in gas chambers was a deliberate scheme under the direction of a single organising mind. If that were brought home to Hitler, why should he not be indictable as a murderer?

“It is in that spirit that the Commission has listed the names of those people who are called major criminals. It treats them as murderers, assassins, thieves, torturers and the like,” Lord Wright declared.
