University final evenly poised

KARACHI, Aug 27: The two-day PCB Inter-university cricket final between Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro (MEUTJ) and NED University was evenly poised on the opening day at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Inserted to bat first, MUETJ were restricted to 189 for nine wickets wickets in their reduced 51 overs. NED in reply were 98 for three wickets in 26 overs.

The match started half an hour late because of light rain and was reduced to 51 overs from 55.

Opener Muhammad Shafique slammed a fine 57 with eight boundaries off 94-balls while Babar Shaikh’s 55 of 64 deliveries with five fours helped MUETJ to post 189 for nine wickets in their 51 overs.

The visiting team got off to poor start, losing three wickets for 42 runs with paceman Fazal Muhammad Khan taking three wickets in fiery opening spell.

But Shafique added 58 runs for fourth wicket with Adeel Imdad. Fazal was pick of NED attack with three wickets for 46 runs in seven overs. Amanullah, Syed Raheel and Aftab Ahmed Khan picked two wickets each.

Leg spinner Amanullah after taking two wickets for 18 runs scored a fighting 33 in 43 balls with six hits to the ropes. At draw of stumps, Sami Khan on 22 with three 4s and Syed Raheel was batting on two.

Babar picked up two wickets for 23 in six over of right medium pace bowling after making a brilliant half century for MUETJ.
