Schools and businesses in a part of New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, will be closed for two weeks in an effort to contain the disease at its local epicenter, Reuters quoted state Governor Andrew Cuomo as saying on Tuesday.
The economic shutdown, which begins on Thursday, impacts an area of New Rochelle in Westchester County that measures 1 mile (1.61 km) in diameter.
The area is the epicentre of New York's coronavirus outbreak, accounting for more than 100 of the state's 173 confirmed cases, the governor said.
