KARACHI: World Youth Day observed

Published August 22, 2005

KARACHI, Aug 21: The Arch Bishop of Sindh, Evariste Pinto, has urged the youth to follow the religious teachings and utilize their energies and knowledge in the betterment of humanity.

He was speaking at a function held at the St. Patrick’s School in connection with the 20th World Youth Day on Sunday.

Youth representatives of 15 churches in the city presented reports of their activities at the function.

The main function of the World Youth Day this year was held in Cologne, Germany, where a mass was led by Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope’s address was televised live around the globe.

The idea of celebrating the Day was conceived nearly a quarter of a century back when in early 1980s, a bishop while pass through a street in Rome as a routine noticed a group of youths sitting, praying and talking regularly near St. Peter’s Square. He discussed the idea in the Vatican and it was adopted.
