LAHORE: The population of some tehsils is more than that of the districts, making it necessary to revise their boundaries, a meeting of the task force for reviewing boundaries was told.

Held at the Civil Secretariat on Tuesday and presided over by Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Social Welfare Raja Basharat, the meeting reviewed establishment as well as procedures and rules for setting up of new districts and tehsils in Punjab.

The additional chief secretary stated that according to the terms of reference of the task force, the local district administration will initiate a proposal for a new tehsil or district. Those proposals would be handed over to a study group comprising representatives of the Punjab Board of Revenue, finance department, planning and development and excise departments.

This study group will review the proposals in the context of population, geography and economic impacts and send its recommendations to the cabinet committee concerned for further proceedings.

The law minister directed the agencies concerned to consider the needs and facilities of the local population primarily for the establishment of a new district or tehsil.
