LAHORE, Aug 19: A meeting on Friday decided to provide extra security to 189 sensitive polling stations in Lahore for the second phase of the local-body elections on Aug 25.

The meeting, chaired by city police chief DIG Tariq Saleem, directed the police officials to be more watchful at the sensitive polling stations. “Deploy maximum force at these stations. I do not want to see any trouble there.”

For other 2,850 polling stations, he said, around 13,000 police officials would perform their duties, besides 5,000 volunteers from civil defence.

The meeting was informed that six control rooms had been set up in the city to coordinate the security measures for the elections. In addition to the deployment, as many as 171 police patrols would also be assigned duties around various polling stations and in other parts of the city.

The police chief warned the officials that he would not tolerate any violation of the election code of conduct. “Nobody will be allowed to display firearms,” he said. He asked the police officials to take strict action against those, who would display weapons before or during the polling.

The DIG directed all the SPs to ensure implementation of the security plan and visit sensitive areas in their respective ranges to monitor performance of their force.
