ANAHEIM (California), Aug 17: Fifth seed Lee Chong-Wei, who is making his world championship debut, defeated Czech Jan Frohlich 15-10, 15-0 in the opening round of the world championships here on Tuesday.
“The first game was a little tougher because I wasn’t warmed up,” Lee said.
The reigning Malaysian Open champion advances to the second round to face either Martyn Lewis, of Wales, who outlasted Chris Dednam 6-15, 15-2, 15-3.
Lee, who needed just 27 minutes to dispatch Frohlich, is in the lower half of the draw together with second seed Kenneth Jonassen, of Denmark, and fourth seed Bao Chunlai.
He could face his Malaysian compatriot and 10th seed Wong Choong Hann or Bao for a place in the semifinals.
Lee beat world number one Lin Dan to capture the Malaysian Open title last month.
This was the first meeting between Lee and Frohlich. Lee agreed with most of the other competitors that the wind in the venue was affecting the shuttlecock.

Eighth seeded Zhou Mi, of China, became the first major seed to be upset, losing to Germany’s Juliane Schenk 11-2, 11-9 in the first round of women’s singles.
Zhou blamed her defeat on a lack of conditioning and jet lag from the long journey to Anaheim.
