Pakistan Steel lift Gold Cup

KARACHI, Aug 15: Pakistan Steel (PS) produced a sterling show to lift the All-Pakistan Governor’s Gold Cup overwhelming fancied National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) 7-1 in the final at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium on Sunday.

Steelmen were enjoying a comfortable 4-1 advantage at the breather.

Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul-Ebad, who was the chief guest at the final distributed prizes and announced Rs 300,000 for winners and Rs 200,000 for the losers.

PS dominated the final with their swift moves and dribble. Yasir Anwar starred in his team’s triumph with a brace of goals.

The winner got off to a whirlwind start with Rashid Imran and Yasir Anwar banging the first two field goals in 10th and 12th minute. Yasir added the third in 23rd minute while Imran Khan netted a minute before the interval.

In between, spearhead Ammar Isharat found the net four minutes before the break.

Kashif Ali scored the fifth goal by converting a stroke and in the next minute Liaquat Ali scored off a penalty corner. Waqas Ahmed completed the tally just before the hooter.

Defending champions PIA secured the third spot when they beat Pakistan Customs 6-4 in. Veteran Olympian Kamran Ashraf struck two goals for winners.—APP
