LAHORE: Twenty-six national and foreign medical specialists delivered lectures on various topics in the concluding session of the 39th Annual International Scientific Symposium at the King Edward Medical University (KEMU).
The renowned doctors from abroad visited the university and delivered lectures at four different lecture halls, providing an opportunity to the Pakistani medics to update their knowledge and skills on the medical education.
The leading Pakistani medics who participated in the symposium included Prof Khawaja Sadiq Husain, ex-principal of King Edward Medical College Prof Mehmood Ali Malik, KEMCAANA President Dr Nasim Sheikh, KEMCA-UK President Dr Tufail, KEMCA-UK Secretary Dr Tabinda Dugal. Senior faculty members of the KEMU were also present.
The purpose of this symposium was to make recommendations by the local and foreign experts and to develop a draft and appropriate process by which the students will be educated with the best medical facilities and modern curriculum.
In his lecture, Prof Umar Sadat presented research study on atherosclerosis (a disease in which plaque builds up inside ones arteries), one of the leading causes of death worldwide. He also discussed ischaemic stroke, risk of early stroke and natural history and best medical therapy.
Dr Lubna Naeem talked about women health regarding breast cancer, its incidence in Pakistan and in the world, risk factors and significance of multiple-screening tests for the breast cancer, including mammogram, clinical breast examination and breast self-examination. She said that the mammograms had the highest rate to detect breast cancer. She also shared useful information about risk factors for ovarian cancer and screening and risk of cardiovascular diseases in women.
Delivering a lecture on the labour pain and use of epidural in pregnant women, Dr Nosheen Akram presented a cross-sectional descriptive qualitative study which was conducted to investigate the perception of epidural in laboring women.
Prof Khalid Masood Gondal spoke on recent advances and initiatives taken by him to improve quality education at the KEMU. He also informed about the establishment of advanced skill lab in collaboration with alumni associations and the KEMU.
Dr Nasim Sheikh deliberated on focusing energies for educating future generations so that Pakistan could compete with other countries of the world by progressing in education and research.
Dr Muhammad Tufail stressed on innovation and creativity in medical education. He expressed gratitude to his teachers of the KEMU for facilitating symposia. He announced research committee would be established at the KEMCA-UK to promote research activities.
While expressing his desire to collaborate with the KEMCAANA and KEMU, he announced Rs10m for Advanced Skill Lab. He also presented Rs650,000 to pathology department.
Prof Mehmood Ali Malik appreciated the efforts for medical education and research at KEMU.
Prof Khwaja Sadiq Husain said he had 70 years of association with the KEMU and lauded the role of this institution in producing quality doctors.
