KARACHI, Aug 13: A candidate for a union council seat was shot dead on Saturday and his associate wounded. The slain candidate was identified as Maulana Abdul Karim Naqshbandi, 55, while his associate as Saleem Memon. “It appears to be a target killing,” the Lyari Town police officer, Omar Shahid, said.

He said Maulana Naqshbandi and Saleem Memon, members of the Sunni Tehrik, were on a motorbike when three armed men on another motorcycle intercepted them near Abdul Latif Bhitai Hall in Baghdadi, opened fire and fled.

Maulana Naqshbandi was contesting for the nazim of UC-2 in Lyari Town.

Tension gripped the area following the incident.
