WHILE farmers in Sindh already live a miserable life, their troubles have increased when untimely rains hit the crops and resulted in heavy losses in productivity. Now desert locusts have devastated green fields in various districts, including Khairpur Mir’s.
Desert locusts are grasshoppers and pose a real threat to farmers. These grasshoppers eat any kind of crop but wheat crop is said to be their favourite one. These insects have devastated thousands of acres of wheat and other crops within a few days. This could result in the severe food crisis in coming months.
The Sindh government needs to take concrete measures in order to deal with this menace. But the authorities have done nothing so far. This has increased the farmers’ troubles manifold.
The Sindh government should stop complaining of lack of resources and take steps to save farmers from complete devastation.

RECENTLY, the government announced Rs500 million for controlling locusts in Balochistan and Sindh. However, there is no action so far.
Farmers are growing wheat now, and it has been for one month that they have been growing wheat and other vegetables. But the swarms of locust in some areas of Sanghar and Umerkot have ruined the crops.
The authorities should take immediate action.
