KARACHI, Aug 11: Brother of an accused in US journalist Daniel Pearl’s murder case arrested from Gujranwala moved a petition on Thursday for his safety through Advocate Rai Bashir of Lahore.
Petitioner Khalid Hashim said his brother, Syed Mohammad Hashim, was arrested as one of the five absconders in the Pearl murder case. But his remand from a judicial magistrate in Karachi had been sought in a ‘blind’ case in which he had not been nominated as an accused.
He apprehended that his brother would be killed in a fake encounter and requested the court for a suitable order to ensure his safety.
PQA RESTRAINED: The Sindh High Court provisionally restrained the Port Qasim Authority on Thursday from selling, transferring or creating third party interest in over 61 acres of land in Bin Qasim Town claimed by the Pakistan Railways.
The railways instituted a suit for declaration and permanent injunction in respect of the land, situated at Deh Gangrio and Deh Bakaran along the railway track.
It claimed that the land was owned by it according the record of rights. The Port Qasim Authority had not only occupied it but was disposing it of after carving out plots. Seven acres and 39 ghuntas at Deh Bakran were sold out to M/s Universal Tractors (Pakistan) Private Limited recently.
The land was sold for Rs 2.5 million per acre against the prevailing market price of Rs 10 million per acre, the Pakistan Railways claimed in its suit. It sought a stay order pending hearing to prevent acquisition of interest by any other third party.
Justice Gulzar Ahmed issued the authority a notice for August 22 and restrained it from dealing with the property in the meanwhile. Advocates Raja Haq Nawaz Khan and Qasit Nawaz appeared for the plaintiff, railways.
