US to monitor yuan: Snow

Published August 12, 2005

MOUNT PLEASANT, Aug 11: US Treasury Secretary John Snow said on Thursday the United States would continue to monitor China’s currency regime and meet with Chinese officials to discuss prospects for the yuan.

“We’re going to keep watching that,” Mr Snow told business leaders after touring a television manufacturing plant in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, referring to China’s July decision to introduce some flexibility to the long-fixed yuan.

“I’ll be meeting later in the month, or soon, with Chinese officials to maintain this dialogue,” he said, declining to give details of where or when the meeting would take place.

Mr Snow said discussions would likely touch on trade issues, financial market reforms, intellectual property rights and China’s efforts to implement and manage currency flexibility.
