ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi underwent surgery for a hernia on Thursday.

While the surgery was successful, Mr Abbasi will remain in hospital under observation for a week. According to family sources, a medical board has informed the government that he will stay in the hospital for a week.

Mr Abbasi was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) from Adiala jail on Nov 2 complaining of hernia pain. He was admitted to the cardiology ward and checked by senior doctors.

The hospital’s medical board had suggested a hernia operation, and Mr Abbasi had insisted on undergoing the surgery at a private hospital.

A doctor from Shifa International Hospital who asked not to be named said Mr Abbasi was brought to the hospital a few days ago but could not be operated on due to high blood pressure.

“On Thursday, the patient was brought to the hospital again and Chief of Surgery Dr Ghulam Sidique operated on him. The patient is out of danger but will be kept under observation for a week,” he said.
