Funeral of Ian Fyfe today

KARACHI, Aug 6: Senior Dawn sports reporter Ian Fyfe, who died on Friday midnight after a road accident, will be laid to rest at Christian Cemetery (Gora Qabrastan) on Sunday at 5.00pm. The mass funeral will be held at Christ the King Church near Khudadad Colony at 4.00pm.

Fyfe, 59, was hospitalised on June 30 after a serious accident near Nursery in which he was hit by a car driven by a teenager.

Although he initially recovered, his condition deteriorated later because of post-surgery complications while he was at Liaquat National Hospital.

He was operated upon in mid-July as he was facing difficulty in breathing. His condition worsened following the operation and he passed away after fighting for life for little over a month.

An all-rounder in sports reporting, Fyfe started his career at Morning News before he joined The News. He joined Dawn in 1993 as sports reporter. While horse-racing was his passion and was the top class horse-racing reporter known for his stylish, free-flowing writing, he also covered tennis, squash, hockey, boxing, and sailing.

Apart from horse-racing, snooker was his second preference and covered major international championships at home and abroad with equal zeal. Being an Anglo-Indian and a soccer fan, he would always support his favourite teams Manchester United and England.

Although he was a bachelor and only left two sisters and a brother to mourn his death, being a colleague, Fyfe was everybody’s friend, a popular figure at Dawn and would cheer his colleagues with his sense of humour.

A thorough gentleman, Fyfe was liked for jolly but simple nature which was evident from the compassion he would show to his colleagues and even to his pets. Being kind at heart, Fyfe had several stray dogs and cats at home. While sports journalism and Dawn has lost a veteran reporter, Fyfe would be remembered, missed by his colleagues and friends forever.
