KHAIRPUR, Aug 6: The main contest for seats of 75 union councils of the Khairpur district is expected to be between the People’s Party Parliamentarians-backed Awam Dost Panel and the Khairpur Dost Panel of the Pakistan Muslim League-F.

There are 76 union councils in the district but the elections will be held in 75 union councils because candidates on the Jubo union council’s six seats, including nazim and naib nazim, have returned unopposed.

According to unofficial results, KDP-backed nazims and naib nazims of Sadar Ji Bhatiyoon, Hadal Shah, Pir Jo Goth and Ghari Mori union councils have also returned unopposed.

According to the assistant election commission office, 2,583 candidates had filed nomination papers for the polls. But now there are 2,277 candidates as 267 candidates withdrew their forms and 39 forms were rejected.

Sindh PPP president Syed Qaim Ali Shah, MNAs Manzoor Wassan and Pir Fazal Shah Jilani, MPAs Nawab Wassan, Naeem Kharal and Zahid Bhambhan and former district nazim Nafisa Shah have been repeatedly accusing the government of resorting to pre-poll rigging.

They alleged that ADP candidates were being kidnapped and implicated in false cases and police were also harassing them to pressure them to withdraw from the contest.

BREACH: A 150 feet wide breach occurred in the Faiz Ganj canal at RD-38 on inspection path.

Water inundated about 350 acres of land due to which sugarcane, cotton and other crops were damaged and seven villages.
