GUJRANWALA, Aug 5: The PPP and PML-N, two of the components of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, are not behind the ruling PML as far as their campaign for the local-body election is concerned.
They have kept their word of uniting on one platform and making seat adjustments against the PML. The campaign the leaders and activists of the two opposition parties are supervising for their hopefuls for the slots of nazims, naib nazims and councillors of about 64 union councils has gained momentum.
An insider revealed on Friday that Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had expressed his dismay over inefficiency of the ruling party which, he believed, had led to unopposed election of several candidates of the alliance.
He had called the leaders and youth wing of the party in Lahore and censured them for “failing to muster support.”
The ARD local leadership, including PML-N former federal minister Ghulam Dastagir Khan, city president Abdul Rauf Mughal, former adviser Khurram Dastagir Khan, former MNA Mahmood Bashir Virk, former provincial minister Barrister Usman Ibrahim and PPP divisional president Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, an MNA, district president Abdullah Virk and city president Lala Idrees were optimistic about making some inroads.
OPPOSES: The Pakistan Shariat Council opposed government’s interference in affairs of seminaries and arresting ulema and students during a crackdown and convened a religious convention on Aug 29 in Lahore for future course of action.
This was stated by council central secretary-general Maulana Zahidul Rashadi while delivering Friday sermon at Markazi Masjid in Sheranwala Bagh here.
He said the council had decided in its annual meeting held in Islamabad that the party would fight against the pressure piled up by the world powers. The meeting was presided over by its central Amir Maulana Fidaur Rehman Darkhawasati.
He demanded that the crackdown on madaris should be stopped while arrested religious leaders and activities be released immediately.
RAZED: The City Tehsil Council razed encroachments in front of shopping centres of flyover and along the GT Road from an old city railway station to Sialkot railway crossing on Friday.
The operation was monitored by municipal administrator Zubair Natt.
