Trio wins 2019 Nobel economics prize for creating approach to fight poverty

Economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize for creating an experimental approach to alleviating global poverty, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday.

"This year's Laureates have introduced a new approach to obtaining reliable answers about the best ways to fight global poverty," the academy said in statement.

The 9 million Swedish crown ($915,300) economics prize is a later addition to the five awards created in the will of industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, established by the Swedish central bank and first awarded in 1969.

Nobel Peace Prize, Magsaysay awards, etc are given exclusively to left leaning academicians. They have lost their relevance today. How can Obama, Malala or Amartya Sen get these awards? Obama has killed more than Trump. Malala hasn't done anything for Peace. And theory of Amartya Sen has no practical relevance. Once a prestige, today these awards have become a political tool. Nobel prize for Science streams are pretty impartial though.

@Sagar, Well said. It is the extreme left leaning, that gets it. Show me one economist in the past ten years who won the Nobel made substantial difference. Last I remember is Friedman but that was in mid 70s.

The only way to eliminate is to have zero population growth and flat rate welfare , say Rs 2000($15) per month for each adult and first two children. That way people will have enough to eat and become more productive.Also go for solar and wind energy on a war footing . With cheap electricity we can make all the goods we ever need and solar and wind are both now cheaper than coal or gas.

@Sagar, Kind a agree. This price is under the shadow left wing social minded people . Still a huge achievement to get Nobel prize. Every Indian and Bengali should proud of this achievement. I don’t what’s there people getting out of it. There people still considered third world people and no sight of coming out there’s poverty .

While we Indians can be proud we have to accept the sobering reality that most of India born Noble laureates in science, medicine, economics have done research outside India. Also our contribution to Noble prize winning research is meagre relative to the size of our population.

Indians are genius if they get fare chance and opportunity. Congratulations Prof. Abhijit Banergee and his wife Prof. Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer. Unfortunately, Indian universities or science labs couldn't produce Nobel Laureates.
