Girls’ schools without teachers

Published January 15, 2002

MULTAN, Jan 14: The local education department has failed to start classes in three girls’ primary schools the construction of which were completed 18 months ago.

The government had reportedly released a sum of Rs1 million for the construction of the schools in Qadirpur Lar in 1999 while the contractors handed over the Girls’ Primary School, Tiba GPS 11/F and GPS Ali Bakht to the education department in June 2000.

In December last, the area Nazim had forwarded an application to the department, saying the schools had been constructed in the locality in keeping with the demands of the residents. Despite the timely completion of these schools, he said, the teaching staff had not been appointed to the dismay of girls’ students.

When contacted, the district education officer (girls elementary) told this correspondent that she could have arranged teachers for these schools a few months ago if she had not been occupied with several formal meetings and seminars. The activities consumed much of her time in the recent past, she claimed. — Nouman
