CHITRAL, Jan 14: The Lawari Road has been closed for all kinds of vehicular traffic after the Lawari Top received four feet of snow.
The deputy director of Works and Services Department, Chitral, Nazir Ahmed, told Dawn that work on removing snow would start by Monday and the road would be cleared for traffic.
He said the length of the snow-covered road was 12 kms on either side of the Lawari Top. He, however, said scarcity of funds was the main obstacle in the clearance of the road.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Peshawar-bound passengers are stranded in Chitral.
SNOW-LEOPARD: The wild life department saved the life of a snow-leopard after hectic efforts and freed it in the Chitral National Park. The leopard had been wounded at Garam Chashma when it broke into a house and was fired at by the inmate in self defence.
The officials of wild life department rushed to the rescue of the animal and hospitalised it for more than a week. The leopard is stated to be of a species at the point of extinction.
Meanwhile, the department of wild life has sacked as as many as 19 game watchers which would badly affect the efficiency of the department.
According to rules, for every 200 square kilometres, one watchman is appointed, whereas in Chitral one watchman looks after 400 square kilometres. The decrease in the number of watchman would deteriorate the situation and a meaningful supervision would not be possible.
