LAHORE, July 28: The education department has served a notice on Associate Prof Dr Ajmal Niazi of the government College, township, for writing a column for an Urdu language daily “against the government’s polices”.

The Governor’s Secretariat had already issued a show-cause notice to Punjab University Mass Communication Department Associate Professor Dr Mujahid Mansoori on identical grounds.

The education department’s had issued the notice to Dr Niazi in violation of Government Service Rules of 1966. It had reportedly sought a reply from him within seven days.

Meanwhile, the PU students demonstrated outside the Lahore Press Club to register their protest against the issuance of the show-cause notice to Dr Mansoori.

Holding placards and banners, they wanted the governor to withdraw the notice otherwise they would launch a drive against him.

They said they would also hold a demonstration on the governor’s visit to the university to chair the senate meeting scheduled for Aug 1.

They said the issuance of the notice amounted to depriving teachers of contributing to the newspapers and other periodicals. The government should encourage teachers for highlighting social issues and problems instead of issuing them notices.

Later, they dispersed peacefully.

LEASE: The university administration has taken a number of measures for the recovery of Rs453,500 lease money of agriculture land and produce like fodder, crops and vegetable.
