HARIPUR, July 27: There are only 10 union councils out of the total 45 in Haripur district where old panels of union nazims and naib nazims are intact and are contesting the forthcoming local body polls.

The panels of nazim and naib nazims that had contested the LB election in 2001 as a single panel had failed to remain intact, except in 10 UCs for the upcoming election.

For the seats of nazim and naib nazims there were old panels that were contesting election from the UCs of Sera-i-Nemat Khan, Pandik, Sikandar Pur, Haripur City South, Central, Kotnajibullah, Darvesh, Baka, Pind Hasham Khan and Ali Khan.

While in the rest UCs the nazims had either changed their naib nazims or they had stayed out of the elections.

BAN CRITICIZED: Chairperson Women Voice Gul Ambrin Minhas has criticized the political and religious groups that have debarred women from casting vote or contesting election in Battagram, Kohistan and some other districts and termed the decision as against the basic rights of citizen.

In a statement she said such restriction on women had exposed the real face of parties that had even portrayed themselves as champions of women’s rights.

“It is unbelievable that a main-stream political party has also sided with anti-women forces in taking such an undemocratic decision”, she said adding that these groups were spoiling the image of the country abroad.
