GT Road expansion delayed

Published July 22, 2005

GUJRANWALA, July 21: The construction of GT Road — from Gujranwala to Lahore — has been delayed as the forest department failed to complete the tree cutting work within stipulated time, it is learnt here on Thursday. The road project was to start in June and expected to finish by the end of 2006. The government had allocated Rs3 billion for the construction of three-lane road while the contract was awarded to the National Highway Authority. The government has also released the funds for the purpose.

It is stated that the forest department had auctioned the trees along either side of the GT Road and directed contractors to clear the track. But they failed to do so.

When contacted, a forest officer confirmed it and said the earnest money of former contractors were forfeited as they left the work incomplete. New contracts were being given for the purpose.

Replying to a question, he said removal of electricity polls was the responsibility of Wapda.
