PESHAWAR, July 19: The “Literacy for all” project has started setting up centres throughout the NWFP and 4,774 literacy centres have been commissioned so far.

This was stated at a briefing given to the Chief Secretary NWFP Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi. Managing Director of the Elementary Education Foundation said the response of girls was tremendous, as 60 per cent literacy centres have been established for them. In Karak, Malakand, Chitral, Mansehra and Abbottabad districts the share of female literacy centres was more than 70 per cent.

At these centres more than 100,000 students have been enrolled. The number of these centres will be gradually increased to 18,000 by the end of next year, he said.

The chief secretary appreciated the work under the project. He said the provincial government attached great importance to literacy and there was need to highlight this aspect so as to create awareness among the masses.

The project director said that strict monitoring and accountability mechanism has been devised.

So far 23 supervisors have been removed for negligence while 409 literacy centres have been closed due to improper functioning.—APP
