KARACHI, July 18: A training workshop on Mud Crab (Genus Scylla) will commence at the University of Karachi from today. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, will be the chief guest at the inaugural session of the moot. The three-day workshop is being organized by the Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology, University of Karachi.

It has been sponsored by the Agricultural Linkages Programme (ALP), Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), Islamabad.

According to Prof Dr Javed Mustaquim of the Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology, the purpose of this moot is to disseminate knowledge and share the experience gained during a three-year project on “Farming of Mud Crab in the coastal earthen pond”.

He said that the workshop would include lectures on various aspects of mud crabs such as the recent developments in taxonomy of mud crab, the present status of mud crab fishery of Pakistan and prospects and problems of mud crab farming in Pakistan.—APP
