Wahab, Amir make it to 15-man World Cup squad

Chief Selector Inzamamul Haq at a press conference on Monday announced that fast bowler Mohammad Amir and pacer Wahab Riaz have made the final 15-man World Cup squad as the team seeks to "inject experience" into its bowling.
Both the players had been left off the initial squad named in April but the chief selector today said that some observations made during the team's recent performance in England were taken into consideration when making the changes to the lineup.
Referring to the team's stint in England, Inzamam said that the green shirts could have racked up 50-60 more runs ─ or restricted the other side to that many fewer runs ─ if they had improved their fielding and taken more catches.
He also explained that the "bowling unit during the England ODIs had not clicked as anticipated or expected".
He said that the team needed bowlers familiar with reverse swing and using an old ball as they had realised in the series that such an ability would be effective.
"Wahab Riaz is an effective bowler. We have given him this opportunity," Inzamam said.

He added: "Amir's name was not in the squad earlier [...] He is one of our senior bowlers and has a lot of experience in England conditions."
Amir was not selected in the preliminary squad for the World Cup due to poor form, but after the Pakistan bowling attack’s drubbing in the first two England ODIs, critics pointed out Pakistan were missing Amir.
"If we have at our disposal two vastly experienced pace duo of Amir and Wahab, then it will be foolish not to include them," Inzamam said.
Inzamam also said Abid Ali would be replaced by Asif Ali due to the latter's solid batting performance in England.
"It was not an easy decision to replace Abid Ali [...] But we wanted someone in that position who could nudge the run rate along," the chief selector explained.
He added that Shadab Khan is also fit to play in the World Cup squad. Due to the latest changes, Junaid Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Abid Ali will be left off the squad.
Ashraf had been given chances in the five-match ODI series against England, while Abid has not been tested in any of the matches — including against county sides — in England so far.

Other than 1 spell in a loosing Cause, I don't see Wahab ever performed. Recently he had been in a terrible form. I cant believe he is still part of the squad. Why Shinwari was not even given a single game despite part of World cup squad. Do we need Shoab Malik, if we have Imad, Hafeez, Haris along with Shadab. He is hardly bowling Player with average of 30 and strike rate of 90s in 20 year career as well as last 1 year does not deserve a place

Wobble just before the world cup. Bowling ability to take wicket, no where near world cup standard, spinners not clicking, Fielding being sub-standard are few of the many worries of Pakistan Team. One positive from this 1 day series is their batting clicked at the right time. Although, historically Pakistan biggest weapon was its bowling and this needs serious attention and 2 warm-up games are there to tie the loose end. Over all, on paper team looks good again, fielding, bowling and paces not giving too many runs are the area of concerns.

Totally a wrong selection from the inception. Why did Inzi go for Abid Ali when we all know that we can also try Hafeez & Babar Azam for opening the innings. Babar Azam does open the innings in T20 so why cant in ODIs. Now a young Abid Ali is ruled out on the basis on just one performance in England.

Sneaky move by Inzamam to include Wahab without making him play in the series against England. Aamir’s timely disappearance from the English series to avoid exposure of his poor form also appears suspicious. Including Amir (who has been woefully out of form) and Wahab (who hasn't played an ODI in 2 years) is a gamble at best. Hope it pays off. Plus hope Mickey and Wahab sort out their previous issues.
It has been a surprising turn of events for Pakistan who usually struggle with batting options. This time the bowling looks very unsettled going into the mother of all events.
It will be interesting to see what playing XI they come up with. It is unlikely that Hafeez and Malik both get a place, because that will be at the expense of Asif and Haris which we cannot afford.

Sorry Chief Selector and your unknown member Hyder / Wasti / Tousif, they do not have ODI experienced, Wahab Riaz days over he is senior citizen age, he speed is very low and he can not effective in England pitch he is in retire age and unable perform, regarding Aamir is sick, is also not effective, its means team have 4 senior citizens Wahab, Hafiz, Shohaib Malik and sick Aamir, reconsider and send youngest player before 23 may, Inzi these cricket is young and talent people game, not these senior citizen.

Looks a balanced side. I feel for Abid Ali, but I'm sure he will get more chances in future games. Perhaps he is more suited for longer format. Agree with inclusion of Asif Ali, Shadab and Wahab will add to the batting depth. Aamir, is a big match player, I have a feeling that he will do well in WC. Finally, let's hope no one gets unfit, and chicken pox and hepatitis doesn't come into discussion again.

I note you included M Amir as public opinion believed experience/conditions in England would show results (as Sarfraz and Fakhar have shown with their batting) but dropping Junaid for Wahab may not have been the best choice.
I would have dropped Shoaib for Wahab. Asif Ali, Haris and Sarfraz are good middle order batsmen and M Hafeez/I Wasim are good all rounders. Using Shoaib would have no usefulness

Once again, the dubious, immoral, illegal and unethical practice of nepotism and cronyism by the so-called hand-picked and unelected PCB's Chief Selector has been the order of the day in announcing the final 15-men greenshirts squad for the 2019 World Cup Cricket tourney in England and Wales starting from May 30, 2019 onwards. Based on merit and merit only, opener Abid Ali should have been included in the squad instead of Chief Selector's nephew Imam-ul-Haq, who has been an "all weather" member of greenshirts playing XI since day one of his dear uncle becoming the Chief Selector of the senior National cricket team. What a shame?

I might be the only one who isn't too perturbed by how our team played in the England series. I mean sure we didn't win a single game but do you think any other visiting side for the WC 2019 would have the same success as England in chasing down 350+ scores against us with such ease? Plus England on current form would have done this to pretty much any other team.
Junaid and Yasir deserved to be replaced and Asif Ali had to be included so no complaints there either. The only controversial change is Faheem (based on how well he has done since the CT 2017) as opposed to either Amir (who hasn't done anything since the CT 2017) and Wahab, who has barely played international cricket during this time. I hope the changes work out, maybe due to the flatness of the wickets we need someone like Wahab Riaz who can take the pitch out of the occasion through bounce, reverse and yorkers. I feel fairly confident of Pakistan making the semi's.

While it 'may' prove another good opportunity for this bowling duo, how does their belated and after the fact inclusion improve the 'fielding department'? If dropping simple catches and mis-fielding are the afflictions, how does providing more catching opportunities cure that? Matches are not always lost due to less than perfect batting, but it is tight fielding which improves chances of winning simply b/c a competent batsman does not repeat same mistake to provide multiple chances of his own ouster.

Bad selection and another step towards relegation before the Semi-Final stage.
Bowing has come out as the weakest link as not a single bowler was able to swing the ball or even bowl yorkers.
Hasan Ali was very expensive, Shaheen and Hasnain are inexperienced, Amir went into hiding citing chicken pox, Malik is a burden in UK condition, Imad is a straight thrower of ball with hardly any turn.
Wahab is the one who missed his run up 6 times in an over in UAE and remember the battering he had at the hands of India in Champions Trophy.
Overall looks like another joyride for the team and the coaching staff.

A better selection than expected from Inzi. In my opinion, on merit, apart of few, most deserved selection. Asif and Imad are only 2 players with SR above 100. Fakhar follows them. Husnain played only 2 matches and showed his credential with wickets in each and batting ability better than all pakistani batsmen, with quick 28 runs (1 six and 4 fours) at SR ~ 150. He is fastest bowler in team too.
Imam and Babar are good batsmen, but slow. They should improve (i can see that Imam is improvig). Hafeez as all rounder is fine (especially as bowler) but should bat at nuber 8 after Fakhar, Sarfraz, Asif, Imad, Babar, Imam and even Hasnain. Actually, in any match, only 1 of 3 (Hafeez, Shadab or Hafeez) should play, batting at no. 8.
Hasan and Afridi (along with Hasnain) should be there in playing team along with either Amir or Wahab.
Looking at past records, I think Sarfraz should open the inning with Fakhar followed by Asif, Imad, Babar, Imam, Hasnain, Hafeez, Hasan, Wahab, Afridi.

No specialist backup opener and yet 4 players competing for 2 middle slots???
None of the bowlers was effective yet again junaid khan made the scapegoat. Poor junaid missed 2015 and now 2019 but people should rejoice as the highly erratic and wayward wahab riaz is in the team. Only amir among those selected can swing and he lost that as well rest of the bowlers are all short pitch enforcers. Junaid is mighty effective in slightly favorable conditions but Mickey mouse again dumped him out. Husnain is nowhere ready for world cup.

IMO the biggest issue with Pakistani team is lack of consistency with the selection. They've been playing Usman Shinwari and Rumman Raees for last 2/3 years but they both were completely forgotten before the WC. Wahab hasn't played since 2017 and he suddenly makes it into the Int'l team in the WC.
In WC we need experienced players and adding players like Abid Ali and Hasnain is a huge mistake. Both have 'ZERO' Int'l cricket experience. I feel Hasnain would warm up the bench during most of the WC.

Not a bad selection. I just have a question mark over Malik and Wahab. Malik never scores big just the usual 30s 40s, not enough to see the game off. Wahab leaks too many runs without game-changing wickets, but maybe Pakistan could do with late order hard hitting batsman.

Some good and some not so good decisions. Junaid should have been retained and Hasnain sent home. Junaid might not have been a success in the series but he is a thinking bowler and has this ability to knock down the best batsmen in the world. Hasnain did not bowl faster than 143 through out the series and had no control over his line and length. He could not bowl a single yorker and does not know the art of reverse swing. He is a good talent but needs more time before being in such a big event.

@Faraz, Junaid lacks pace. Hassan is still a lot quicker and more penetrative on the dead wickets they seem to produce now-a-days here in UK. Even England's bowler were hammered quite a few times by your batsmen. This is definitely going to be a batsmen's world cup this year

Fahim Ashraf needs to work hard on his batting. Looking at his batting performances, he is no way better than Hassan Ali, Amir or Wahab and that's not the characteristics which make someone an allrounder. To merit a all-rouder tag, he should at least be 50% of what Abdul Razaq was.

Batting order, especially numbers 3 and beyond, actually looks good. The bowling, however, has misfired spectacularly and I expect that to be the case in the world cup, too. Our two most senior quicks are a guy who couldn't play a single game in this series due to chickenpox and whose average has been pitiful in the last couple of years, and a guy who has not played international cricket in over a year. That cannot bode well. For once, going into a world cup, it is our bowling department that looks the weaker suit. Well, I wouldn't be a Pak fan if I didn't believe in miracles. Here's hoping for (another) one. Also, as others have pointed out as well, where is Shinwari?

I see a lot of experts expressing their views here on the inclusion of Wahab Riaz. I have to agree he was in awful form the last time he played for Pakistan and I had been screaming on top of my lungs to drop him from the team. However, if any of you watched the last two editions of th PSL, you'd have noticed that he is a much better and improved bowler. His reverse swinging yorkers have been lethal and he has played a huge role in getting Zalmi to the finals. You need pace on these flat wickets and taking a gamble on Wahab is not a bad idea. I agree that Shinwari is hard done by but somebody has gotta make room. Let's give our support to the 15 men that are selected as these players are the best you got at the moment.

This can only happen in Pakistan that Wahab was not even in the best 23 of which the squad was to be selected. He was the best bowler in the Pakistan Cup and PSL but because someone did not like him, he was not to be considered for the squad before now where their own skin is at stake. And now we have two main bowlers in Wahab and Amir of whom non has been part of the England series.

So we prepared for the last two years to choose a winning combination and ended up with Hafeez and Malik, who have passed their shelf life and should have retired a couple of years back, Wahab and Amir, who were not good enough to even be considered for England series but now all of a sudden good to play in the world cup. This team does not have players who can are match winners, there are just players who can play. Unfortunately, I do not see this team reaching the semi finals. The questions is will the selection committee resign or get fired if Pakistan fails miserably in the world cup?

Pakistani cricket fans after yet another disappointing World Cup : We need to implement a proper selection policy, no arbitrary selections. We need a system in place.
Also, Pakistani cricket fans : Bring back people who haven't played/performed since 2017.
As an aside, Wahab really does prove that you can live off one bowling spell for the rest of your career.

@Faraz, bro shinwari hasnt done well recently especially against the recent SA series. Wahab is a better choice in terms of speed and accuracy of bowling yorkers although he suffers badly from lack of control but even then in a major contest like WC, it is always helpful to have a genuine fast bowler. We cant have a bowling unit of left arms only so Hassan had to stay. I agree with you on continuation of Hasnain - he should have been replaced (by Junaid preferably)

Considering that both Amir and Wahib did not play in the recent matches they get the nod over Junaid and Ashraf. They may be experienced but their recent performances are poor to say the least. I can't imagine if they could have performed any better than those who played. Good luck guys you have a lot to prove.

Obviously Wahab’s selection reeks of desperation but you can’t blame the selectors for this “Hail Mary” after watching the bowling the last four games. Same with Aamir, he has to be an improvement over the bowlers we just witnessed in England.
This is a 4 win team, probably 6-7th best in this world up. Good luck but have little or no expectations

The remarks are across the spectrum. I believe that the final team is a blend of youth and experience. After a whitewash in the last two series, I believe they have selected the best combination. This is the best group for a long and arduous competition. There is depth in batting and potency in the bowling. The wickets are batting friendly, which made our batting look better than it is and the bowling appear weaker than it actually is. The team must complement the different specialties. Arthur and the coaches must focus on improving the fielding as "catches win matches". They will succeed only if they play attacking cricket and go for wickets rather than containment !

Pitches have turned out to be different, no swing and no help from the pitch. Hence Aamir's inclusion.
With previous set of bowlers Pakistan gave away 100 runs in first 10 overs without early wickets.

I really think that Sarfaraz needs to open the batting. He has been mostly a non-factor in all the matches recently played expect the last ODI against Eng. That being the case, I think it would be best if he opened the inning and provided some cushion to the remaining batsmen.

While earlier Wahab was erratic he has come a long way and has worked hard on his fitness, line and length, speed and can bowl reverse swing. Shoaib Akhtur mentioned 4 weeks back that Wahab will make it in the world cup team and he was right. Junaid Khan's exclusion is not fair but if i were to pick between Junaid and Wahab I would pick Wahab due to his speed, accuracy and reverse swing. I wish the pakistan cricket team the best of luck in the world cup.

What kind of decision is this? Why did the team management choose the players in April in the first place only to be dropped now? The team management (coach, selectors and captain) have been the same for 2-3 years and they should have the capability to make a team stable for the World Cup well in advance.
Amir and others totally missed the chance to gain the experience of that crucial series against England that ended now.
This is either mismanagement or incompetence or a combination of both.
But in the end, it may not matter because any Pakistani player can rise to the occasion (except probably Malik). He should have been dropped. The credit won't be given to the team management though if Pakistan does well in the World Cup. Their actions seem like they are gambling and playing with players careers.

Imam has done well as an opener and deserves a place in the Pakistan team. On the other hand Fakhar Zaman is vulnerable on or outside off stump and hence he is not reliable compared to Imam.

Common sense selections, but not sure why hafeez and malik are required..could have used this spot for another spinner. Also, as someone below stated, could have used babar as opener to fit in asif ali and 3 pacers in the same playing XI, not completely sold on imad wasim as bowling all rounder
