Protest against water shortage

DADU, July 17: Farmers of Sehwan and Dadu talukas held a demonstration on the Indus Highway on Saturday to protest against shortage of water in the Pir Shakh and Daim and Dal waterways.

Led by Ghafoor Jamali and Laung Panhwar, they also staged a sit-in for four hours.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jamali alleged that irrigation officials were selling water share of tail-end growers to influential farmers.

He said residents of 30 villages were facing hardships due to non-availability of drinking water.

Mr Panhwar alleged that Pakistan Muslim League leaders and influential landlords had tempered with watercourses and modules of Daim and Dal waterways.

He said a number of growers were not able to cultivate their lands in the Sehwan taluka.

He appealed to the Sindh secretary for irrigation to take notice of the matter and direct irrigation officials to ensure water supply to tail-end areas.

The SDO Bhan irrigation sub-division assured the protesters that they would be provided with their water share.
