KARACHI: Prof Khalid Mahmood Iraqi was appointed acting vice chancellor of Karachi University (KU) on Wednesday by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

Before this assignment, Prof Iraqi was chairman of the KU’s department of public administration.

A notification issued by the secretary for the universities and boards department says: “In exercise of the powers vested in him under Section 13(2) of the University of Karachi Act 1972, as amended by the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws (Amendment) Act 2018, the honourable chief minister Sindh is pleased to appoint Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi as acting vice chancellor of the University of Karachi with immediate effect till the appointment of a regular vice chancellor through the search committee.”

An alumnus of the KU, Prof Iraqi did his masters in political science in 1989 and later PhD in public administration. He specialises in public policy, development studies and public relations.

At the KU, he served at various positions, including dean, faculty of management and administrative sciences, director of admissions, adviser to vice chancellor on campus security affairs and students’ adviser.

He was appointed a lecturer in 1990 and later an assistant professor in 1998 and professor in 2009.

He was a visiting faculty at Hamdard University, University of Balochistan, Quetta; University of Management and Technology, Lahore; Pakistan Study Centre, University of Sindh, and NED University.

He is also the co-author of a book and has over 40 research papers and articles to his credit.
