UNITED NATIONS, July 16: The G-4 — Japan, Germany, India and Brazil — are expected to call for vote on their framework resolution at the end of next week, say diplomats here at the UN.

However, they said that now the G-4 resolution did not have support of majority in the 191-member General Assembly.

“With strong opposition of the G-4 resolution by the United States, China and Russia, the UN members have become increasingly weary of the proposal by the four countries,” said one diplomat.

The G-4 are holding negotiations with the African Union in a bid to reach a compromise with the 53-member body on their separate draft which will be tabled in the UN General Assembly on Monday.

The African Union is also holding talks with the Uniting for Consensus (UFC) group led by Italy and Pakistan. Italy Deputy Foreign Minister and Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram led the talks aimed at reaching a understanding on the African draft and the UFC proposal.

Amid reports of a rift within the African Union on any compromise with the four countries seeking permanent seats on the UN Security Council, the Foreign Ministers of G-4, will meet at India’s UN mission here to discuss strategy ahead of a planned meeting with an African Union delegation.

Indian Ambassador Nirupam Sen, when asked if the G-4 would seek a vote next week on their resolution, replied “absolutely”.
