Four hurt in jail clash

HARIPUR, July 16: A clash between two groups left three prisoners and a numberdar injured in the central jail Haripur on Thursday evening, police sources said. The injured were admitted to the jail hospital while the alleged attackers were locked in the Qasoori Chaki, a cell where trouble-makers are lodged as punishment. The clash erupted between two groups, one comprising Faisal Qadoos, Gul Sharif, Miskeen and Malik Waqar of Haripur and the other including Mehmood Khan of Peshawar, Amir Mohammad and Fazal Razak of district Bunair.

According to a letter written to the City police station by the superintendent Haripur jail, the two groups were verbally warned of action if they created trouble in the morning.

Despite that warning, they came face-to-face in the evening, with the group belonging to Haripur allegedly attacking its rivals with bricks, fists and belts. The attacked left three prisoners and numberdar Jan Mohammad injured.

The injured were later shifted to the jail hospital after medical check-up at the DHQ hospital.

The attackers have been undergoing a jail term of 36 years after being convicted by an anti-terrorism court on charges of kidnapping a South African national for ransom two years ago.

Gul Sharif and Faisal Qadoos from the attackers group have filed an application with the district and sessions judge Haripur through one of their relatives accusing the jail administration of subjecting them to severe physical torture and depriving them of proper meal for the last two days.
