ISLAMABAD, July 13: The People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) on Wednesday announced the formation of a committee for monitoring the forthcoming local government elections. According to a press release, the committee has been formed on the instructions of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

Senator Sardar Latif Khosa has been named the coordinator of the committee. The members of the committee are Senator Enver Beg, MNA Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, B.A. Malik, Kamran Zafar, Ilays Mohsin, Masood Sharif, Sheikh Mansoor, Palwasha Behram and Nazir Dhoki.

The monitoring committee has been given the task to apprise the foreign embassies, diplomats and human rights organizations regarding irregularities in the elections, violations of human rights, rigging and cases of victimisation of political opponents by the government.

The committee held its first meeting at the party’s Central Secretariat in Islamabad on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by all the committee members and the party secretary-general, Jahangir Badar. The meeting condemned alleged victimization of party workers and supporters in Sindh province.
