KARACHI, July 13: Four bodies of those died in the train accident near Ghotki were brought to Karachi in a chartered plane late on Wednesday night. Eleven injured were also brought to the city by the same flight and sent to hospitals. The chartered PIA flight was arranged by Edhi Foundation. Rizwan Edhi of the foundation said that the total expenses of the airlift were borne by a philanthropist.

Two of the dead were identified as Naseema, a resident of Model Town, and Najma, a resident of Gulshan-i-Ghazi, Karachi. Mr Edhi said Naseema’s two children, a six-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son, were with her body and they were assuming that their mother was asleep.

The other two bodies were of Kanwal Rizwan, 22, a resident of North Karachi, and Soofia Aijaz, 38, a resident of Block-17, Federal B Area, he said, adding that Kanwal’s nine-month-old child was missing.

Mr Edhi said that more than 100 ambulances were mobilized in the rescue operation at the scene of the accident. “Edhi Foundation provided 70 coffins, 500 shrouds and 200 trucks laden with ice to the Civil Hospital Ghotki on its request,” he added.

Relatives of those travelling by the ill-fated trains thronged the cantonment station here to inquire about the well-being of their loved ones.

Pakistan Railway had established a counter to apprise the people of details of those injured and dead. However, till the evening, the railway officials had no list of the victims.

PR officials had affixed a paper on the wall next to the counter which displayed emergency numbers of various hospitals in Ghotki, Sukkur and Mirpur Mathelo where the casualties had been sent.
