Quetta tragedy

Published April 18, 2019

I DID not expect this from a prime minister whom, a majority of us hold in such high esteem.

We voted for him, hoping he will make the public aware of the magnitude of corruption committed by the previous corrupt lot. We pray that he may succeed.

However, I would like to bring something to his attention — the case of the Hazara community who are a peaceful people.

Who can forget the cold harsh winter of February 2013, when they refused to bury their loved ones and sat out in the cold with no one shouting slogans? They just sat there with the coffins till someone would hear their plea.

It’s very sad that the PM has not gone to console the Hazara community and listen to their grievances.

THE brutal killing of members of the Hazara community should be strongly condemned. This atrocity shows just how vulnerable are our minorities in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

This is not the first time that mass killing has taken place in the Hazara community — intermittently they have been targeted by extremists.

It is the responsibility of the state to protect every citizen as per Article 4 (a) of the Constitution.

Last week’s attack was no different from what happened in New Zealand, only the manner in which the New Zealanders reacted to the tragedy and showed solidarity with the Muslim minority was different from our reaction.

We must learn from the Kiwis on how to behave after a tragedy and also express solidarity with those grieving regardless of caste, culture and ethnicity.

It is time the state took measures to curb terrorism.
