QUETTA, July 13: Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan Chairman Dr Tariq Hassan has underlined the need for educating potential investors to attract investment in capital market.

Speaking at a road-show on “Investment in the Capital Market”, organized jointly by the SECP and the Central Depository Company (CDC) here on Wednesday, Dr Tariq said that investors played basic and important role in the development and promotion of the capital market, but they could play much better if all related information would be available to them.

A large number of people belonging to business community and traders attended the show and took interest to get information about the working of the capital market.

“Provision of information to the investors would help in establishing the investor community and providing more opportunities to develop capital market,” the SECP chief said and lauded the services of CDC it was making in this regard.

He said that holding of such road-shows for investor education helped in achieving two basic objectives. Firstly, to ensure investor protection so that they were fully cognizant of both the investment risks and rewards, the importance and significance of financial planning and most importantly, the rights and responsibilities of investors and the resource available to them. Information asymmetries provide under advantage to certain market participants.

Secondly, it would help in establishing “soil retail investor-base that would provide batter opportunities to the retail investors to play their role in the promotion of the economy.

He stressed the need for enhancing the investor base and said that the presence of retail investor was of vital importance as it led to broad-basing of equity ownership and redirected household savings into more productive channels.
