SHEIKHUPURA: Four policemen, including a sub-inspector and an assistant-sub inspector died, while as many others, including a suspect, sustained serious injuries when a police van overturned near Kharianwala on Faisalabad Road on Sunday.

According to police, an eight-member team of Lahore police headed by Sub Inspector Asadul Rehman was returning from Lyyah after arresting a suspect, Aslam, allegedly involved in heinous crimes.

Near Kharianwala a front tyre of the police van burst and the vehicle overturned and fell into ditch.

As a result, SI Rehman and ASI Ghulam Mustafa died on the spot, while constables Mujahid, Kausar, Akram, Amir Shahzad, van driver Akbar and the suspect Aslam, who were seriously injured, were shifted to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Two of the seriously injured constables -- Mujahid and Kausar -- succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while the condition of two others and the van driver was said to critical.

Bhiki police are investigating.

In another accident, on motorway near Qila Sattar Shah two members of a family died, while three others sustained injuries.

According to Factory area police, Shamshair Ali, his wife Rukhsana, four-month-old daughter Arooj and a son Abbass were going to Pindi Bhattian from Lahore by a van that collided with another van near Qila Sattar Shah.

As a result, Shamshir and Arooj died on the spot, while his wife and son sustained serious injuries. The injured were hospitalised.
