CHITRAL: The owners of automobile workshops in Chitral city have demanded of the government to ensure proper disposal of waste produced by their workplaces.

Esa Ali Khan, a representative of the automobile workshop owners, told reporters here on Sunday that unhealthy workplaces were not only harmful to workers but they polluted environment as well.

He said the workshops located in Denin, Krup Risht and Polo Ground Road areas didn’t have proper places or system to dispose of waste both solid and fluid generated in large quantity on a daily basis.

“The waste ultimately pollutes the river’s water,” he said.

Mr Esa claimed that the tehsil municipal administration’s sanitation workers had never come to their auto-workshops.

Workers complain of health problems, pollution

He complained that the TMA had repeatedly ignored requests to supply safe drinking water to the workshops, but to no avail.

“The use of contaminated water has many workers serious problems, while the rest are at high risk of contracting diseases,” he said.

Mr Esa also asked the TMA to force landlords to set up toilets in or alongside workshops.

He insisted that whenever tenants demanded toilets on the premises, the landlords served eviction notices on them.
