ISLAMABAD, July 11: A high-level meeting at the flood relief centre in General Headquarters was informed on Monday that army troops had provided relief goods to 234 villages and had rescued 7,677 people in Punjab and the NWFP. Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Tariq Majeed chaired the meeting at the GHQ to review the flood situation and the ongoing relief and rescue operations by the Pakistan Army.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Lt Gen Majid was briefed about the latest situation in the Sutlej, Chenab, Indus, Ravi, Kabul and Swat rivers. Lt Gen Majid was also apprised about the arrangements made by the army for rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit areas of the country, it said.

ISPR said that troops rescued over 2,500 people in Charsadda and Nowshera districts where as many as 87 villages were inundated and 1,980 houses were damaged. Soldiers also rescued during various operations another 4,200 people in Layyah district, it said.
