KARACHI, July 11: Adviser to the Chief Minister on Local Government Waseem Akhtar on Monday directed the KWSB to ensure a judicious distribution of water across the city. “Our policy is quite clear, that water must reach all people without discrimination of language they speak, and every area on merit. And this policy will continue before and after the elections,” he said while speaking at a meeting of KWSB officials at the 9th Mile office.

The adviser pointed out that in the past, everyone had tried to resolve the issue of water distribution but even today it continued to be the major issue in Karachi, and linked to it was the uneven sewerage system.

“In my opinion, the water issue can be resolved, but the Board has not carried out planning for the future till date,” he remarked.

He also regretted that the K-3 project was reaching the completion stage but no thought was so far given to the planning for distribution of water from that source.

He asked the officials whether the existing infrastructure could stand the load when K-4 project would be commissioned. During the past four years, he observed, no attention was paid to this aspect. He said if the elected leadership was not capable enough, the board officials, present here, should have guided them.

“The problem of water shortage can be solved if work is done in this regard by keeping politics aside,” he said. However, he deplored, nothing had been done during the last four years for improving the water and sewerage system.

Mr Akhtar said it had come to his knowledge that while chalking out planning in respect of Tameer-i-Karachi Programme, the KWSB MD was not being taken into confidence on the schemes related to the Board.

“Now the government is paying special attention to this aspect which was under consideration at governor’s level.—APP
